Map Monday: Hammer and the Cross (2014) by Bruce Munro

Last weekend was tough for me. My doctor put me on new medication that gave me headaches (among other side effects). I also had trouble sleeping and I had to mark a sad anniversary for me. This made me cranky and I found myself lashing out at people who didn't deserve it, which only made me feel worse. I was so down in the dumps that I skipped out on writing and instead just had a pity party. It was then I asked myself a question I think a lot of people who create stuff for the Internet ask at some point when their spirits are low: why am I even doing this? What is the point? Does anyone actually care?

Then, late Sunday night, I saw this map on Facebook:
This map was commissioned by longtime contributor to The Update, Sam McDonald (who has sent me another Audio File, so stay tuned for that) and created by one of my favorite alternate cartographers, Bruce Munro. It is based on my What Happens Next: Harry Harrison's The Hammer and The Cross Trilogy article where I imaged what the present day of Harry Harrison's The Hammer and The Cross universe would look like. Now I may be biased, but this is a pretty awesome map.

It is drawn in the usual Munroist style, which allows for a lot of detail, snarky commentary and even a Lovecraftian reference or two. Bruce also included an extensive description of the scenario with the map that expanded on some of the ideas I included in my original post and created a really fun world where high technology and realistic magic coexist. I liked how Bruce fleshed out the nature of divinity in this world and how there could still be conflicts regarding religions despite it being proven that gods are a natural phenomenon. The additions to the Hidden Folk were also great. I never really explained how they were able to fight humanity during the Oil Age, but it makes sense that they could keep up with humanity technologically speaking if they had any chance of resisting.

Bruce also corrected some of the plausibility issues in my original scenario, which I was certainly okay with. I especially liked how he filled in all the blank areas of the map, which helped make the scenario even more plausible...well as plausible as a world with gods and Neanderthals could be. I was also happy to see Bosnia is still around. It brings a smile to my face to think that my family's doppelgangers could be somewhere in this timeline if that tiny, war-torn nation still exists.

So thanks again to Sam and Bruce for doing this. It really helped save a crummy weekend and reminded me again of why I keep blogging about alternate history. Don't forget to check out Bruce's DeviantArt page and tell him what an amazing map maker he is. You should also subscribe to Sam's blog (Knowledge, Adventure and Wonder) and check out his other work for Amazing Stories.

Honorable mention this week goes out to "Theaters of the Second Greco-Latin War" by Rebecca "Upvoteanthology" Stirling.

What Happens Next: Harry Turtledove's Worldwar & Colonization

Last week I shared What Happens Next: SM Stirling's Nantucket Trilogy again on my social media pages. Randal White commented on it and said he would like to hear my thoughts on Turtledove's Worldwar series. At first I wasn't interested because Turtledove already did that himself with Homeward Bound and other alternate historians, like Bruce Munro, have already done pretty good speculations of their oen. Nevertheless, I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I decided to fast forward to 2100 after humans have enjoyed seven decades of FTL starships and see what happened next...

The dawn of the 22nd century has taught the Race a dirty world: decolonization. Yes, the cost of maintaining their colonies on Earth have finally outweighed any benefits. The current Emperor is trying to reform the Empire's society by forcing the Race to adopt a faster rate of technological process and he believes that antagonizing the Tosevites (or Humans/Big Uglies) will only prevent the major changes to the extremely conservative Race society necessary to accomplish this goal. Troublesome regions (like China [1], Turkey, Sunni-majority Iraq, Persia, the Congo, Morocco, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Korea and Tasmania) are being given independence, while more loyal areas are finding themselves with increased autonomy whether they like it or not.

While the Empire may be in decline, it is still a force to be reckoned with. They remain an interstellar empire with a vast nuclear arsenal (which has grown larger as more Tosevite colonies spring up around their stellar neighborhood). Although they lack FTL starships, they should be reaching a breakthrough soon and they have deals with some Human factions to "lease" their ships, with the understanding that no member of Race is allowed in the engine room. The current Emperor is also determined to catch up with Big Uglies, even if he has to drag his own people kicking and screaming (or whatever Race metaphor is more appropriate). They also aren't without friends on Earth/Tosev. They maintain their alliances with France [2], Finland, Poland and other states, who find the Race a better ally than some of the other human powers.

We should also not forget about the areas of Earth that are inhabited primarily by the Race. Regions including northern Mexico, the Sahara, the Arabian peninsula and Australia, are heavily developed and well defended by large and well-trained armies ever since the original Colonization Fleet crew was required to take up arms in case war with the Big Uglies ever happened again. That being said, the Empire finds these subjects...rather weird. They have adopted many Tosevite customs and ideas. Some even wear clothes and wigs, much like human teenagers covered themselves in body paint in the 1960s. On top of that, monogamy is a common practice and this has not gone over well when some of these couples have come to Home, Rabotev 2 or Halless 1 in the middle of mating season. The Race legal system, which to be honest gets little work in the highly conformist and law-abiding society of the Race, suddenly finds themselves forced to tackle such alien (literally and figuratively) concepts as "rape". Nevertheless, they are big supporters of the current Emperor's policies and reforms and see any further advancement as a guarantee of their protection from the Big Uglies.

Enough about the Race, lets look at the Big Five or the five human powers that withstood the Race's invasion in the 1940s. The most powerful and largest (if you count their off-world colonies) is the United States of America. As the Race retreats from Earth, the Americans gleefully fill the power vacuum they left behind, creating new democracies that are more than happy to look the other way when American corporations set up shop. Today Little Rock is the center of human civilization and the President commands the respect of everyone, even from the Emperor of the Race. The US Navy (the only branch with experience in getting people to work together in metal cans cruising through a hostile environment) commands a vast fleet of FTL starships that patrol the known universe and keep an eye on anything that can threaten the American hegemony.

The USA was the first power in the known universe to develop FTL travel and have made the most of it, exploring new star systems and planting colonies whenever they find anything interesting. Most of these colonies are still governed as territories, but there has been talks of carving states out them eventually. No one is in a rush, however, since even with FTL starships, communication between Little Rock and the colonies is slow. The colonies are satisfied with the "benign indifference" they receive from Little Rock and have no interest in changing the status quo since they are practically self-governing. The same can't be said about some of the "involuntary settler" colonies. These communities are formed from people the government has found "troublesome", a precedent sadly established when picking the crew for the Admiral Peary in 1997 [3]. Most of these colonies have a station in orbit staffed with Marines just in case there is any trouble.

Although the Americans have found worlds that can support life, most are of the Home variety, meaning they are hot, arid worlds with few bodies of water. Some more intelligent life has been discovered as well, but again they resemble the Race and their subject peoples. This has caused some scientists to believe that lizard-esque species like the Race are the norm in the universe and that humans are an aberration caused by the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. Without that meteor that killed the dinosaurs, its likely that an intelligent lizard-like species would have arose on Earth and have fallen quickly to the Race invasion [4]. Then again, nothing good ever came out of counterfactual thinking like that. Am I right?

While the United States is certainly the top dog, its not without its rivals among the other Big Five...or should I say Big Four since Britain really isn't a major power anymore. The United Kingdom is the only victorious human power to come out of the Race Invasion to not develop an FTL drive on their own, instead being given it by the United States. They do have a few off-world colonies of their own and are close allies of the Americans, but they find this relationship grating at times, especially since the Americans won't let them forget the time they were nominal allies of Germany in the 1960s [5]. Frankly the British elite haven't forgotten about the time when they were the most powerful country on Earth and would love for the chance to return to the glory days, but aren't sure how to do that just yet.

Then you have Japan. Although an FTL capable nation with a large space fleet and many off-world colonies, they have always remained one-step behind the Americans. Although the US was supported by Japan throughout much of the late 20th century, this relationship has fallen apart, party because the US objected to the Japanese use of chemical and biological weapons on their rebellious subjects. The Japanese have extensive mining operations in the Asteroid Belt and elsewhere, having shown little interest in finding life bearing worlds like the Americans, but making up for it by hauling valuable and rare minerals. Their goal is to knock America down a peg and take their place as the premier human power...and some of the Japanese high command think its time for a little "out of the box" thinking. For example, the Japanese have a lot in common with the Race culturally. They both respect their Emperors and have very conservative societies. Perhaps its time to let bygones be bygone and begin a new era of cooperation [6].

Then there is the Soviet Union, which is just...strange. They are hardly communist these days, having adopted a radical technocratic society that has made great strides in catching up with the Americans and Japanese by their complete disregard for human life and their enthusiastic embrace of super-advanced artificial intelligence that manage the Soviet economy and spearhead their scientific advancements. Cybernetic enhancements are becoming increasingly popular [7] as is the practice of naming children after numbers. The current General Secretary herself is obsessed with uploading her mind into a computer, thus allowing her to govern the state until the end of time. As can be expected the Soviets freak the fudge out of their neighbors, more so than even...

Nazi Germany! Although to be fair modern Germany follows the ideals of National Socialism as well as the modern Soviets follow Marxism. For a brief period in the mid-21st century Germany ruled a small, but significant interstellar empire, but to accomplish this goal they had to squeeze every last resource out of Europe and stole the rest through espionage. Eventually this became unbearable for even the most loyal Aryan and when reformers began espousing about the democratic ideas found in the first edition of Mein Kampf, this led to a coup, a counter coup and a short civil war. Today the German government is more like a one-party dictatorship with trappings of democracy instead of being a dystopic nightmare society. They have even begun to suggest that the racial ideologies of the past were a little off-base (which is easy since there is no one left to kill).

As the Germans turn inward they have pulled their troops out of their former Europeans territories. New states have emerged on the continent which now have to find their place in the world. Having found the Americans too liberal and the Soviet too weird, these Europeans oddly enough have found themselves growing closer to the Race government in Cairo. Some of the more devious minded members of the Race even think the Empire could benefit by sponsoring their own Tosevite not-empire in Europe, perhaps led by Britain, that would unite the Race-friendly states with the former client states and territories of the Third Reich. This would give the Empire a friendly not-empire on Tosev to combat the other not-empires. This union of the European states may even end the Race's retreat from Earth, without upsetting the Emperor's reforms.

There is still the question of what to do about the Reich's off-world colonies. The majority of them are now controlled by hard-lined SS forces, who have threaten to unleash their nuclear arsenal on anyone who tries to take them down [8]. These colonies (sometimes called the Fourth Reich) represent probably the first non-Earth, human nation, but they aren't something to be proud. If rumors are true, they make the Soviet Union look like Pleasantville, what with their bizarre genetic experiments, their penchant for building castles and worship of pagan deities who don't seem to correspond with anything from human mythology. Exactly what is going on in the Fourth Reich remains mostly hearsay since they have surprisingly good counter-espionage, but whatever is happening, the Race and Humanity agree that something needs to be done sooner rather than later.

Of course, events elsewhere may save the Fourth Reich from destruction. Not everyone is onboard with the Emperor's reforms. Turns out trying to change a civilization who has done things a certain way for tens of thousands of years is harder than it looks. There has been plenty of opposition to the Emperor's reformers and the critics are starting to organize. Its becoming more and more common to see anti-reform activists wearing body paint in the colors of nations that haven't existed for millenniums. Meanwhile, more Hallesites and Rabotvites are beginning to think things would be better off if they had their own emperors instead of listening to the one from Home. The Tosevite colonists still remain loyal to the Emperor, but the cultural divide between them and more traditional members of the Race makes this a mixed blessing. Those few historians who study the ancient past of the Race are rediscovering a term that has not be used in a long time: civil war.

If the Empire were to fall apart, the conflict would inevitably draw the human nations into the conflict and not all on the same side. Cooperation between the powers has broken down and each country has their own reason to support one faction of the Race over the other. Nuclear weapons are plentiful and the fleets that carry them through the cosmos continue to grow. If war on an intergalactic scale were to break out, it could mean the end of civilization as we know it. Perhaps that is why colonization efforts have increased tenfold in recent years [9] (even among the Race). If war were to break out, maybe enough colonists would survive that star-faring civilization could rebuild itself.

Humanity and the Race are hoping for the best, but are preparing for the worst.

[1]: Which almost immediately fell into civil war between the communists and Kuomintang. There is a small imperialist faction, mostly centered in Manchuria and supported by Japan.

[2]: When the Race liberated France after the Race-German War of 1965, the Free French government in the Pacific quickly declared "independence" from France, lest they have to listen the Lizard stooges in Paris. Nothing really changed at the top, but everyone got a new flag to decorate their buildings with.

[3]: Its not unusual for judges to give criminals the option of jail, the military or off-world colonies.

[4]: Other scientists, meanwhile, find that theory complete hogwash. Dinosaurs were feathered after all and more closely related to birds than modern lizards. In fact, when you come to think of it, the "Lizards" aren't lizards at all because...but that just confuses the masses so the less said about that the better.

[5]: Think "cheese eating surrender monkies" if you want an idea of how bad it is.

[6]: It should be noted most of the FTL ships the Race lease from the Tosevites are Japanese ships.

[7]: In fact, with gulags being so 20th century, the Soviets are forcibly installing these cybernetic implants into dissidents to completely erase any vestiges of individuality so there is nothing left but a completely loyal servant of the state.

[8] Its hard to hit a moving target in space, even something going STL. Thus, missiles with nuclear warheads are used to increase the chance of scoring a hit. For space-to-ground weapons, simple projectiles weighing many tons are preferable since the kinetic force they unleash is equal to if not greater than a nuclear bomb.

[9] They are finding a lot of willing colonists fleeing the ongoing Second Chinese Civil War.

What Happens Next: Harry Harrison's The Hammer and The Cross Trilogy

The next installment of "What Happens Next" returns with a look at the late Harry Harrison's The Hammer and The Cross Trilogy. What happens when an English slave boy converts to an organized version of Norse paganism and bring religious tolerance and advance technology to Medieval Europe? Find out below. As always, this future is based off my own personal opinion on where I thought the author was going with his literary universe. I tried to stay as close to the author's vision and the rules established for his world. Watch out for spoilers.

The One King's reign may have been short, but its legacy has reverberated down the centuries. King Shef's rule touched off a renaissance that started in northern Europe and spread across the world. It was a renaissance not just of technology, but of ideas like toleration, liberty and freedom. Now as the year 2014 (much of the world still uses the Christian calendar) nears its end, scholars look back at how far the human race has come...and how far they still have to go.

The Empire of North, as expected, did not survive its King's mysterious disappearance after the Battle of Rome. Leaving no heirs and with the Viking kings refusing to recognize his pact with Alfred of the West Saxons, the different parts of the Empire went there separate, but peaceful, ways. Alfred became the lord of all of the British Isles while Guthmund of Sweden (sometimes called "the Greedy") eventually united all of Scandinavia under him and his heirs in a loose confederation. The former halves of the empire have remained close allies (even today) although there governments would change and sometimes whole regions would gain (and lose) independence. This cooperation was especially fruitful in the 900s with the discovery and colonization of the New World.

In contrast, Shef's rival Bruno, the short-lived Emperor of Rome, is a more controversial figure in history. Many deplore his religious zealotry and cruelty (even by 800s standards), while German nationalists credit him with creating the German state and Christians credit him with establishing the framework that eventually led to the unification of the Western and Eastern branches of Christianity (which is something the German nationalists don't brag about since their state church left the mainstream Christian church centuries ago).

Nevertheless, present day Europe still reflects the marks of both men. The British Isles are still united under the Republic of the Isles, the heirs of Alfred now living as private citizens. They are still allies with the Nordic Union, although relations remain cold with former members of the Union, Finland and Novgorod Republic. Other close allies include Normandy and the Jewish-majority state of Septimania (which doesn't always get along with the other Jewish states like the Kingdom of Khazaria or the city-state of New Zion).

While the Holy Roman Empire collapsed shortly after Bruno's death, a generation later the western German states unified after being inspired by the Emperor's belief in German supremacy. From this core group the Kingdom of Germany was created and it unified the German people (except for those odd Prussians, but they aren't considered "true" Germans anyway). Germany is one of the great powers on the continent and has worked hard to maintain that role by intervening in neighboring states to keep them small and weak (Moscow has lost count how many times it has been sacked). They have calmed down a bit recently and the King is now more of a figurehead (and tourist attraction), but old animosities die hard.

Other important states in Europe include technocratic Andalusia which still controls much of Iberia and North Africa, the Bulgar-Greco Khanate which straddles the Balkans and Asia Minor (the Armenians and Kurds split the eastern half) and Occitania, the only Cathar Christian majority state in the world (although they have communities throughout the world). Eastern Europe to the Urals are split into many different states.

The events of the renaissance in 9th century Europe can also be seen as indirectly responsible for how the rest of the world looks as well. After their attempts to invade Europe and the Middle East were rebuffed, the Tatars spent more time consolidating their Asian conquests. Today the Tatar Empire reaches across East Asia, Central Asia, Siberia, northern India and the west coast of North Thorgunland. It would probably be the world's greatest power if it had a functioning central government. The Empire is very decentralized with the electors of the Kurultai holding the real power and generally unwilling to surrender any of it to the Khan. Not only does this suit the diverse ethnic groups of the Empire just fine (especially the Nipponese who would love to break away), but also the rest of the world who feel one nation holding too much power over the other would just be a recipe for endless conflict. The Vijayanagara Empire keeps a watchful eye on their northern border, just in case the Tartars get any ideas.

There was some attempts by Europeans to colonize Africa over the centuries. British and Norse traders were some of the earliest groups to enter the market (if you don't count the Islamic Europeans, which even today people still forget). They found some African practices, like slavery, abhorrent and native Africans also distrusted the message of the Christian and Way missionaries sent to convert them. Much of Sub-Saharan Africa's history is full of wars between Europeans and natives leading well into the 16th century, with the Islamic nations to the north sending weapons to the Africans to check the expansion of the Europeans. Today all of Africa either belongs to the larger Caliphates of the north or are independent native states affiliated in some way to Kongo or Great Zimbabwe. The one exception being the small Leonese colony on the Cape.

The New World (North and South Thorgunland) is a patchwork of Norse, British, Norman, German, Leonese, Andalusia, Tartar, Srivijayan and native states, the largest being the former Norse colony of Markland. The SkrƦlingjar had no immunity to Old World diseases and thus there was a large death toll across the continents. Over time the SkrƦlingjar recovered and even adopted technology from the colonists just in time when immigration really kicked up in the mid-14th century (new advances in medical sciences had led to a population boom as more diseases were wiped out). The colonial wars dragged on to the 18th century before the Treaty of Stamford established a lasting peace by creating a council were colonial and native nations could air disputes. The spirit of the Peace of Stamford proved contagious and today the former capital of the One King serves as the site of the World Council, which acts as an assembly of nations who work together to keep the peace on Earth.

The world has known one global conflict, although you will never find it in the official record. Throughout much of the 19th century, the developed countries waged a war to eradicate the Hidden Folk (also known as trolls to the Norse). Almost every nation knew about the Hidden Folk, the physically opposing humanoid species that were experts at hiding. World nations generally enforced the ancient treaties made between them and the human communities that lived near their dens. Most scientists believe they are the descendants of an extinct species of humans, which could explain why humans can cross-breed with them, but no one has been able to confirm this theory because none of the Hidden Folk have ever stepped forward to do the extensive DNA testing necessary. Despite the long peace, the early 18th century was marked by massacres and destruction at human factories, laboratories and military bases carried out by the Hidden Folk. The usual methods of communication with the Hidden Folk only conveyed warnings that humanity needed to stop their machines or they would end up destroying the world.

Human governments covered it up (blaming it on industrial accidents and foreign sabotage) since they didn't think anyone would believe them if they blamed Sasquatch for all of their problems, but at the same time sought to eradicate the Hidden Folk menace (besides humanity was never that comfortable with living next door to a race that considered them a part of their diet). How successful humanity was depends on who you ask. Most humans never realized what was happening besides a rash of disappearances and odd military maneuvers in uninhabited wildernesses. While some Hidden Folk did die in the fighting, the ones who suffered the most were the half-breeds who were often rounded up and exterminated out of fear of them collaborating with the enemy. Only after human scientists began discovering the dangers of human caused climate change that the majority of nations realized what the Hidden Folk were getting at. The World Council stepped in and passed a series of environmental regulations that were adopted across the world and the Hidden Folk attacks ceased (now the World Council looks the other way if someone tries to cut corners and finds all their shiny new nano-factories going up in flames).

There are very few people in this world who don't believe in divine being(s), although with few exceptions (the Church of Germany, Sunni Muslims in the Arab peninsula, the Sapa veneration of the Inkas, etc.) most follow the Hundite Theory of the Divinity. Neurologists have confirmed that the human mass consciousness is powerful enough to create actual god(s) who live apart from humanity in a different realm of space/time, but can manifest their power on Earth. Those specially attuned to the god(s), the heroes and saints of history, can act as conduits for these beings and their power. Most nations keep tabs on these humans and often employ them as agents (a soldier who can bring down divine justice is quite effective weapon against a terrorist strong holds). Of course, since the god(s) take the form and personality that their believers give them, world nations fear what might happen if a truly evil god is ever created and unleashes the feared Ragnarƶk.

Exactly how to prevent this, no one knows, but the Svandists have an idea. Although they have rejected what another timeline would call the atheism of their founder (its hard to argue with scientific proof that gods exist), they still hold that all the god(s) are inherently evil and thus need to be wiped out. To do this they believe they must purge all fantasy from the human mind. Even realistic fiction is frowned upon by a devout Svandist. Nevertheless, most people don't take them seriously, but they certainly fear the Svandist state of Circassia. Every moment of their citizens life is regimented and controlled. Special implants given at birth gives powerful artificial intelligences the ability to access every mind and punish any fantastical thoughts. They have purge all forms of individuality and they desire to spread their philosophy across the globe. Circassia may be small, but their arsenal of weapons of mass destruction keeps some World Council members awake at night. Currently Circassian scientists are very interested in several near-Earth asteroids...

The affair of this world, however, don't concern Shef. He sits waiting on the floating platform in the equatorial Atlantic ready for his turn up the Space Graal. Although many in the world carry his popular name, he secretly knows he is the true heir of the famous Shef, a direct descendant of the One King who faked his own death to live in peace with his wife. Although his olive skin and dark hair are products of his ancestors interbreeding with the people of the Emirate of Sicily, his blue eyes betray his Norse heritage. Like his ancestors, however, Shef is about to go on a great voyage into the stars. Ever since the secrets of faster-than-light travel was discovered, humanity has been expanding across the stars in an ever widening sphere. Shef, leaving his Earth-bound troubles behind, is seeking a new life on a distant globe just recently settle by Man.

Unbeknownst to him, someone (or something) in its little pocket of space/time has taken a shining for this new Shef. He/she/it (it has many names and forms, depending on who is praying to it) has plans for him and it could shake the very foundations of human civilization...

Which work of alternate history would you like to see me do next? Let me know in the comments.

What Happens Next: SM Stirling's Nantucket Trilogy

This is the first in what I hope may become an ongoing series where I speculate about what happens next after our favorite alternate history books and series conclude. For this inaugural post I cover SM Stirling's famous Nantucket trilogy that began with Island in the Sea of Time. Quick disclaimer: this is all based on my personal opinion.

It has been over twenty years since "The Event" sent the island of Nantucket circa 1998 to the Bronze Age and the world could not be more different. Technology is advancing at a rapid place and the sleepy town of Nantucket is now the center of a vast empire stretching across the Americas, southern Africa and Australasia, with Outport colonies and protectorates across Europe, Asia and Africa.

Of course that is the image the Republic of Nantucket likes to present (especially to its rivals), but in reality things are much more complicated. Most of Nantucket's territory is claimed rather than controlled. Nantucket settlements tend to hug the coast and the government relies on allied indigenous tribes to police the interior. To Nantucket's credit they take their treaties with these tribes seriously (enough people are alive to remember how Native Americans were treated by the country they came from), but they remain untested since there is still a lot of room between the Nantucketers and the natives (the entire world population is only near 100 million, but growing fast as future medicine and sanitation spread). As generations go by and populations grow and expand, conflict is likely inevitable and the Native American cultures of Central America and the Andes are advance enough that conflict may happen sooner rather than latter.

Due to the distances involved in travel or communication, Nantucket is more of a confederation than an empire. Local communities have a lot of autonomy and practice the town meeting form of direct democracy popular in New England. Representatives are sent from across Nantucket's Outports to the assembly in Nantucket proper to represent their interests, although colonies can often get away with not following certain dictates from Nantucket Town on occasion. The former Tartessian colony in California does it all the time and can be considered to be only nominally part of the Nantucket sphere (and if they thought they could get away with it they would break all ties immediately). For defense, communities rely on local militias and its quite common to go out in public armed (heck, most merchant ships carry a couple cannons just in case, even in the most civilized parts of the ocean).

This has made Nantucket rather conservative culturally, with a healthy dose of individual liberty, since most people feel if you don't like the way things are run you can pack up and start a new colony on the cheap and readily available land elsewhere (just as long as there is no one else living there already). Minorities, however, are well protected by Nantucket constitution, especially homosexuals who have long had the right to marry. The dividing social issue of the day is actually polygamy, which has become more popular in the newer colonies. Opponents feel such relationships are destructive for a functioning civilization, while supporters believe there is nothing that should prevent consenting adults from being in whatever relationship they wish to be in and point to many other cultures around the globe who practice it (some have pointed out, however, that you can always find a man who wants another wife, but rarely a woman who wants another husband).

The Coast Guard (still calling itself that despite being a world-spanning navy) is the glue that holds the Republic together. They patrol the sea-ways keeping an eye out for pirates, protect and supply struggling colonies and explore new places to trade and settle. The Age of Sail ended shortly after William Walker was defeated. Now steam ships form the backbone of the fleet, although hybrid sail ships are still used for exploration purposes where coaling stations are a few and far between. Airships are also used for travel and patrol in the more settled areas and there are even some heavier-than-air craft, although they remain rare since few countries fly them.

Alba remains a staunch ally of the Republic (calling them a "protectorate" is considered a high insult these days). Immigrants from there often make up the majority of the population for most colonies and they are well represented in the Nantucket military. They could probably even take the top spot away from Nantucket if the people ever got their act together. There is still a lot of animosity between the Earth Folk and Sun People, especially since the Sun People have become such zealous converts to Christianity and look down on their pagan neighbors. Some Sun People who just couldn't handle the many changes "went viking" in western and northern Europe and the more successful warlords even managed to "pull a Walker" over some primitive tribe on the continent. This has put most of the region in turmoil and while Nantucket would like to intervene, there have more pressing matters elsewhere.

The Mediterranean Sea is the center of civilization. Here the great powers trade and maneuver for position. Relations between Tartessos and Nantucket have normalized since Walker's defeat. Most of the highborn young men (and some women) go to school in Nantucket and generally have a good opinion of Islander culture. Tartessos merchants compete with Nantucket across the globe, but their rulers try not to antagonize the Republic in exchange for Nantucket to look the other way as Tartessos expands across Western Europe and North Africa (Republic naval bases in West Africa are there to make sure they don't get any ideas about entering the local slave market). Although Tartessos is forward thinking enough that they do prepare for a potential conflict with the Republic and have looked into "submarines" as a viable way to fight Nantucket if worse comes to worse.

Despite what some doubters expected, Sicily managed to survive without suffering any nasty bouts of ethnic cleansing (although things were rough in the beginning). The tripartite democracy between the natives, Greek colonist and freed slaves (who are in agreement they need a better name to call themselves) has stood the test of time through their policy of not rocking the boat. Their neutral stance makes them the perfect place for the powers to settle disputes and conduct shady business dealings. That coupled with the nascent banking industry has brought a lot of wealth to the island and the prosperity has helped keep the peace.

Then there is Achaea, the number two power in the world, with its large and well trained army. Although driven out of the Middle East by Nantucket and her allies, this has not stopped their expansion into the Italian and Balkan peninsulas and their push into Western Ukraine. Under wise leadership of the aging Odikweus, Achaea has grown by leaps and bounds and any threats are dealt with accordingly (although only a few know the real reason why that small village on the Tiber had to be burned to the ground and the land salted so nothing could grow there again). Unlike Tartessos, Achaea's relations with Nantucket remain poor and they would like nothing better than for a strong leader to arise in Alba and take the island nation out of the Republic's sphere. Yet there is a growing threat to the east that has made the Achaean leadership rethink there relationship with Nantucket.

Changes in Babylon have worried not just Achaea, but Nantucket as well. Ever since the untimely death of King Kashtiliash and his Nantucket-born Queen, the empire has been ruled by an anti-Nantucket Regency until the heir comes of age. It has bullied its neighbors (the Hittite Empire, Mitanni and Egypt) into vassalage and is expanding hard into Persia. The regency has also been quashing the young democracy movement, who they blame for the death of their King. Nantucket has hoped to contain the growing threat of Babylon by sending emissaries to the Indus Valley civilizations and the growing power of MeroĆ« (the diplomatic delegation includes the biological daughter of the former Walker lieutenant responsible for bringing the new learning to the region). Attempts were also made to court the Shang Dynasty of China, but without much luck. The King when he does deign to receive the Nantucket representatives is usually cold and dismissive of their proposals. There are rumors he is much more welcoming to a mysterious delegation from deep in Asia, but who they are remains a mystery to the Islanders.

For Althea Walker of the House of the Wolf and last true daughter of William Walker, that suits her purposes just fine. With the help of those still loyal to her father's memory, she has carved a small empire in the Fergana Valley and has untied the nomadic tribes under her Wolf's head banner. The Claws of Hekate continue to serve her and have been useful in helping her seek out new allies and eliminate any Nantucket spies who delve too deep into the interior. She has been biding her time, building her strength and waiting for the time when the Republic dominance of the waves means little to her new power.

A new faction has convinced her that time is right. They are a strange order of men who are extremely difficult to kill and have almost supernatural power over other humans. These "Seekers" believe the time is right for her to strike and proved their power to her by making Babylon more...acceptable as allies. Now with her Babylonian and Chinese allies to distract the Republic, she will drive her mounted army of carbine wielding warriors into the Indus Valley and India proper. With the wealth of the sub-continent to command, she will push aside her allies once they have weakened Nantucket and her allies and punish all those in Tartessos and Achaea who betrayed her father. Once Nantucket has been driven from the Old World, she will sail across the sea and burn Nantucket Town until there is nothing left.

As storm clouds gather in Asia, bizarre events are happening on Nantucket. People are having strange dreams about a disaster that happened to the world Nantucket left. They see burned out husks of once great metropolises where knights joust for sport and pagan rituals happen in forest preserves. Sightings of "ghosts" have also increased around Nantucket Town, even at the headquarters of the Coast Guard. People report seeing oddly dressed individuals gaping around at the buildings or walking as if in a daze before disappearing. While many in the Republic dismiss these reports as nonsense, older Nantucketers who remember the Event are not so sure. The Event was never really explained, what with survival overshadowing any serious investigation into what happened. What if these shared dreams and ghosts are somehow connected to what happened to Nantucket? Quietly, an informal task force headed by the Arnstein family has been created by several high ranking members within the Republic to investigate these phenomenons and the nature of the Event as well.

Who knows? Maybe they will even figure out how they were sent back in time, or more importantly, why.
