New paperbacks (and e-books)

The Iron Wyrm Affair by Lilith Saintcrow

Description from Amazon.

Emma Bannon, forensic sorceress in the service of the Empire, has a mission: to protect Archibald Clare, a failed, unregistered mentath. His skills of deduction are legendary, and her own sorcery is not inconsiderable. It doesn't help much that they barely tolerate each other, or that Bannon's Shield, Mikal, might just be a traitor himself. Or that the conspiracy killing registered mentaths and sorcerers alike will just as likely kill them as seduce them into treachery toward their Queen.

In an alternate London where illogical magic has turned the Industrial Revolution on its head, Bannon and Clare now face hostility, treason, cannon fire, black sorcery, and the problem of reliably finding hansom cabs.

The game is afoot...

SS-GB by Len Deighton

Description from Amazon.

What if WWII went the other way? In this alternative-history novel, Deighton imagines a chilling world where British Command surrendered to the Nazis in 1941, Churchill has been shot, the King is in the dungeon, and the SS are in Whitehall. In occupied Britain, Scotland Yard conducts business as usual...only under the command of the SS. Detective Inspector Archer is assigned to what he believes is a routine murder case--until SS Standartenführer Huth arrives from Berlin with orders from Himmler himself to supervise the investigation. Soon, Archer finds himself caught in a high level, action-packed espionage battle.

This is a spy story different from any other--one that only Deighton, with his flair for historical research and his narrative genius, could have written.

Automatic Woman by Nathan L. Yocum

Description from Amazon.

The London of 1888, the London of steam engines, Victorian intrigue, and horseless carriages is not a safe place nor simple place…but it’s his place. Jolly is a thief catcher, a door-crashing thug for the prestigious Bow Street Firm, assigned to track down a life sized automatic ballerina.

But when theft turns to murder and murder turns to conspiracy, can Jolly keep his head above water? Can a thief catcher catch a killer?

Fishpunk by Rick Novy

Description from Amazon.

When Wisconsin Territory botanist Calvin Scholz receives a mysterious package from an old friend who recently came to an untimely demise, it sparks a wild adventure. The mid-1840s is a dangerous time, for the Americans are at war with Mexico.

Scholz survives attempts on his life as he tries to deliver the package to his friend’s brother, a Savannah ichthyologist interested in fish-powered machinery--ichthyotech. The situation grows increasingly dire, and Scholz finds himself aboard a riverboat in the Amazon Basin wilderness.

While this novel contains a fast-moving, original story, it is also a tasteful parody of the Steampunk movement. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, as well as a few compulsory bad puns.

Huckleberry's Hail Mary by K A Harris

Description from Amazon.

Eli Grubbs, small town newspaperman turned conscripted Confederate infantry corporal, leads three fellow soldiers through the woods of Central Virginia in the aftermath of the Battle of North Anna. The men are anxious to re-unite with what’s left of their regiment, but as night falls they turn their efforts to finding shelter instead. A well-hidden fissure carved high into a large rock formation offers the weary soldiers sanctuary and rest, but unbeknownst to them, it also hides a terrible secret. When liquor loosens Grubb’s lips, a mysterious Captain Huckleberry pushes all in with a plan to turn the tide of the war in the South’s favor for good.

Smudgy In Monsterland by Paul Rasche

Description from Amazon.

In the thousandth year of the Third Reich, a helpless orphan runs afoul of an increasingly bizarre series of evil-doers inside a giant amusement park orbiting Neptune.

WARNING: This is a violent story. It includes massacres, stabbings, beheadings, amputations, people retrieving heavy boots from the other room just to be able stomp on someone else's head more effectively, disembowelments, falls from great heights, witches being burnt and countless beatings.

WARNING: This is a strange story. It includes haunted yet dignified chainsaws, insane necromantic triplets, self-mutilation for the purpose of cartoon character emulation, important cakes, dark and secret religions and a war fought over the placement of a comma.
