What is Earths?

Guest post by Jakub Olczyk.
What is Earths?

It’s a turn based strategy developed by me, with slightly different setting than other 4x games. It takes place in a future where scientists developed a way to move between parallel dimensions which contain alternate Earths. Those Earths are explored by an international agency.

The idea.

You can ask yourself how does it work, but the idea is pretty simple. At the start of the game player has one Earth (our Earth), which is the homeworld of an international agency directed by the player. The goal is to conquer Earths from parallel dimensions. Our science department is looking for the special threads leading to connection with alternate worlds. When they find one, we can deploy our agents by the use of special catapults (devices for movement between parallel dimensions)…

Technical break

Ok, but how do you create these alternate earths? Basically the game takes place on a hex grid (similar to Civilization V, but a grid is on a sphere, not on a plane). Alternate worlds are generated from an .xml file containing all possible alternate events created by me (in the future I’m planning to create an additional editor for the player). Those events are changing parameters of the historical simulation.

The game

…Which are built from rare Earths. So, at the start of the game your ability to move between worlds is limited. Most of the actions of the player are made with a usage of Agents (slight similarity to heroes from Heroes of Might and Magic). At the start of a game your main goal will be to infiltrate communities of parallel Earths, making possible for your agents to steal technology or rare Earths (needed for catapults). In time, after some technological progression, you’ll be able to craft a multidimensional empire.

Technical break, again.

Agent's portrait
Historical simulation is based upon cellular automata, where different polities are fighting each other. When I present an alternative event, it changes parameters of some entities, thus making results of the simulation different. I would call it a semi-procedural generation (because alternative events are somehow predefined). I’m working now also on adding events where human civilizations weren't developed, because of catastrophe or other evolution lines.

Development

Earths is in a very early phase of development (pre-alpha), and is created by one person (me). The future shape of this project depends on success of the IndieGOGO campaign, where I’m trying to collect money for further development. If it fails, the game will still be created, but it will stay as a side project. So, to sum up, the playable version will be created in late 2015 (if the campaign ends in success).

Breaking News: "Clash of Eagles" by Sebastian P. Breit IndieGoGo Campaign

Sebastian P. Breit, also known as War Blogger, is a friend and contributor to Weekly Update.  Now he needs our help to raise money to finish writing his new novel Clash of EaglesClash is the sequel to his debut alternate history novel Wolf Hunt, which follow the story of a naval task force from our near future being sent back in time to the middle of World War II.  Here is the description of Clash:

Adolf Hitler is dead. The Führer of Nazi Germany has been brought down by a bold attack, led by the mastermind of Germany's military intelligence organization, the Abwehr, Wilhelm Canaris. But Canaris did not act on his own. Soldiers - men and women - from the future, flung back in time by a strange tempest, fought at the conspirators' side. The course of history has been changed.

But not all is well.

The Nazis are shocked and battered, but far from beaten. Reinhard Heydrich, the head of the Nazi security apparatus and new self-proclaimed Reichsführer, is gathering his forces as occupied Europe finds itself cut in half, embroiled in a German civil war.

With Germany in disarray, Italy's fascist leaders are seeking glory and conquests of their own. Across the Channel, Churchill's Britain stands undefeated and defiant, confident that the time has come to turn the tides of this war.

And while the United States stands as a distant towering giant, with "Uptimers" of its own working to prepare it for the coming struggle, the realization of those in Germany that there is more than one devil (and he may come offering gifts) may just propel their fellowship into a precipice...

Sound interesting?  Well if you want to see it get published, go to Indiegogo and help Seb raise some money.  Depending on how much you donate, Seb will give you certain perks ranging from a signed copy of Wolf Hunt to an important secondary character being named after you in Book 3.  If you cannot donate any money, please help spread awareness of Seb's campaign by sharing a link to the campaign site with your friends.
