Weekly Update Needs a New Banner

[Editor's Note: In case you haven't noticed, we have a new banner (see above). Thanks again to everyone who participated, but this post no longer applies.]
Sometime ago I tried to create interest among my more artistically inclined fans by offering a contest to create a new banner for Alternate History Weekly Update.  I wanted something in the style of what Sean and Seb have at the top of their sites.  The only response I received was a shockingly misspelled email from a reader who said he was going to design me a "flag".  After explaining to him, over several emails, I did not want a flag, he responded that he would make me a banner and proceeded to never contact me again.

Despite that setback, I have yet to give up hope.  Alternate History Weekly Update still needs a new banner for both the blog itself and our social networking pages, especially for our Facebook page and group.  So if you have some skills and would like me to showcase your work on the top of this blog, send in your designs to ahwupdate at gmail dot com.

Some guidelines to remember:

  • You must incorporate the name of the blog "Alternate History Weekly Update" into the design.  Script and look is up to you, but the name of the blog must be clearly visible.
  • Colors are up to you, I am actually considering dropping the blue/white scheme so feel free to go nuts.
  • Nothing offensive or copyrighted.
  • There is no deadline, but the sooner you submit your design the better chance it has of being selected.

As for compensation, I do not have much to offer.  Those who wished to be paid should contact me via email (ahwupdate at gmail dot com) to express their terms.  Anyone wishing to donate their time and creation will get a banner ad to their site on the front page of the blog.

Good luck and hopefully I will not receive another horribly written email.

Breaking News: 40,000 Page Views!

Sometime earlier today the blog surpassed 40,000 page views. It is amazing how fast Alternate History Weekly Update has grown in less than one year.  I would like to thank our contributors, fans and the authors who produce alternate history for helping us grow. The last time the blog reached such a milestone was on 3/8/12 when I announced the 30,000th page view. Let us see how the blog has progressed since then.

First, the map of our readers between the two events:

World map of readers 3/8/12
World map of readers 4/26/12
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our first readers from Morocco and El Salvador, who discovered the blog when we were breaking the 40k barrier. Now onto our social networking presence:
  • We had 37 Google followers on 3/8/12, now we have 42 (Goal: 100 by 6/12).
  • We had 89 Facebook fans on  3/8/12, now we have 107 (Goal: 300 by 6/12).
  • We had 44 Twitter followers on 1/13/12, now we have 78.  I am happy to announce that we surpassed our goal of 50 Twitter followers by June 2012.  Excellent!
Considering how fast this blog is growing, advertisers could profit from forming a partnership with Weekly Update.  Those interested should check out our Sponsors page for more details. Also feel free to check out our Amazon page to purchase a subscription for your Kindle (or Kindle app) or donate through PayPal (see top left of this page). All proceeds go to reward our contributors for their hard work and to promote the blog. Anyone who donates will be listed on our Sponsors page to thank them for their support.  I also will like be adding Google AdSense in the next few days, so keep an eye out for that.

If you are interested in contributing to this blog, contact me at ahwupdate@gmail.com.  We are accepting guest posts or full-time contributors.  So if you have a review or an article about alternate history that you want to share with us, I encourage you to contact me.

And thank you again for reading Alternate History Weekly Update.

Yesterday the blog surpassed 30,000 page views. This is another great milestone for the blog and I would like to thank our contributors and fans for helping us grow. The last time the blog reached such a milestone was on 1/13/12 when I announced the 20,000th page view. Let us see how the blog has progressed since then.

First, the map of our readers between the two events:

Breaking News: 20,000 Page Views

So today the blog surpassed 20,000 page views. This is a great milestone for the blog and I would like to thank our fans for helping us grow. The last time the blog reached such a milestone was 11/5/11 when I announced the 10,000th page view. Let us see how the blog has progressed since then. First, the map of our readers between the two events:
World map of readers 11/5/11
World map of readers 1/13/2012
South America and the Middle East are starting to fill out nicely, but what is more important is how we have grown in our social networking presence:
  • We had 23 Google followers on 11/5/11, now we have 30 (Goal: 100 by 6/12).
  • We had 66 Facebook fans on 11/5/11, now we have 76 (Goal: 300 by 6/12).

The Future for Alternate History Weekly Update

Let me start by saying I could not be happier with how this blog has grown.  I started Alternate History Weekly Update with the intent to help alternate history fans be better informed about what was going on in the genre. Since my first post in June, I can honestly say that this has been a success.  What began as just an experiment in writing has evolved into a group blog whose fame has grown across the alternate history community.

I am not about to give up yet, but I have to realistically consider the limits of myself and the other contributors of Alternate History Weekly Update.  As much as I wish to ignore it, I have a real life, with a real career and a real family that is counting on me.  It is hard to rationalize spending time on a blog when I could be doing things to further my career.  My contributors also have real lives and, more importantly, are volunteers who are doing me a favor by writing for this blog.  I have no way to reward them, nor encourage new contributors from joining our ranks.

That is why I have begun looking for ways to finance this blog.  I realize that I am unlikely to make a fortune through blogging, especially with a blog dedicated to the subject of alternate history.  All the money I raise will go back into the blog, either through promotion or as financial incentives to contributors.  This project still remains a labor of love for me, not a potential cash cow.

That is why I recently polled you, the readers, about your opinion on ads on this blog.  Generally you were all supportive of ads on this blog, but a significant number of you stated that your support would depend on nature of the ads themselves.  You have spoken, and I have listened.  I believe I have come up with a solution that will please everyone.

First, I am going to allow ads on this site, but I will maintain control on what ads are allowed.  That is why I added a Sponsors page.  Those interested in becoming a personal or corporate sponsor of Alternate History Weekly Update can email me at ahwupdate@gmail.com.  Sponsors will receive ad space on the Sponsors page and the main blog space, plus a post announcing their sponsorship along with additional posts when they offer special deals to the fans of the blog.  While I welcome all offers, I reserve the right to pick and choose sponsors.  I promise not to advertise anything that may be offensive to our readers or has nothing to do with alternate history (though I will make exceptions for anything that is relevant to speculative fiction in general).

Second, if you look to your left, you will now see a Donate button.  Using your PayPal account, you can make donations to Alternate History Weekly Update.  This is completely voluntary, no one is required to do it.  While I encourage you to do so, as the money can be used to promote the blog and reward contributors, I will not be disappointed if you choose not to donate nor hound you with demands for donations.  It is also up to you on how much you wish to give.  Whether it is $.01 or $100, I do not care.

Finally, you can now purchase a subscription to Alternate History Weekly Update for your Kindle or Kindle app for only $.99.  While it is free to read the blog using any device with Internet capabilities, I know from experience that it can be difficult to read this blog using a Kinlde, Smart phone or other device.  For only a small fee, Amazon will present the blog in a user friendly format so you can keep track on updates wherever you are.  Considering 5% of our readers use Androids, iPhones, iPads, iPods and Blackberries to read Alternate History Weekly Update, this is a great service for making your reading experience more enjoyable.

Once again, thank you  for all of your support and I hope you will continue to remain fans of Alternate History Weekly Update as we continue to experiment and evolve.

Breaking News: Banner Contest

Alternate History Weekly Update would like to announce a new contest for anyone with some graphics skill.  As the blog grows and evolves we believe it is now time that we get a new banner for the top of the page.  Right now it is just a large line of text, but we are hoping for something more artistic.

If you wish to submit a banner of your design, here are the guidelines:
  • You must incorporate "Alternate History Weekly Update" into the design.  Script and look is up to you, but the name of the blog must be clearly visible.
  • Colors are up to you, although I am partial to the blue and white backgrounds of the blog.
  • Nothing offensive or copyrighted.
  • There is no deadline.  The winner will be notified by email before the banner is posted on the blog.
The creator of the chosen design will be announced in a special post after the banner is posted. If you have any questions or wish to submit an entry, please email me at ahwupdate@gmail.com.  Best of luck to all who are interested and I look forward to seeing your work!
