I've got no problem to pay the same amount for a self-pubbed books as I'd do for that of a legacy publisher - provided I can see someone put some *effort* into it. "East Wind Returns" by WPG sells at $.99 at roughly 90,000 words (Kindle edition). I'd easily have paid $4.99 or $5.99 for it. The usual price bracket for self-pubbed authors in general seems to hover between $.99 and $3.99, $4.99 or $5.99 being outliers. Point is, authors want to make money. Point, however, also is, that you can with good accuracy judge a self-pubbed book's quality by its cover. If an author doesn't have the wits or doesn't want to make the effort to have an at least semi-professional cover made, that tends to say alot about the quality of its content. Well, if you've got specific points you'd like to cover, maybe I can provide some more coherent insights.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5080248961176338496.post-64710771515413235802012-02-10T11:49:35.411-06:002012-02-10T11:49:35.411-06:00Cost is something I forgot to mention, but I do pl...Cost is something I forgot to mention, but I do plan to bring that up in a future post about self-publishing alternate historians. Amazon shows it at $4.11 (VAT included) for me at a Kindle file size of 274 Kb. That's around 50,000 words. Not good. In fact, it seems to combine the very worst aspects of indie/self-Publishing:

- unaltered stock photograph with white script added in MS Paint (there's a reason DeviantArt exists^^)
- unchecked political bias (if you want to preach, get on Talk Radio)
- implausible (your story has to make sense)
- unacceptable price/content ratio (a 274KB file isn't a full length novel)

The only thing you didn't mention was editing flaws.
