I think growing up in the South, I found it hard to believe that you could just lump most of the US and South America together with Britain and Australia to create one nation united by "sameness." Then there's the issue of Europe getting its act together and counting all Asians as being of one cultural background (and what about Africa???)<br /><br />I think a truly terrifying (if not as sexy) alternate history idea would be if modern sanitation and/or disease prevention was delayed. For example: what if penicillin had never been discovered? Or even aspirin? Today we think pain is an abnormality, but at a certain point in history pain was simply part of daily life. Imagine the impact on world trade (and thus our modern geopolitical framework) if we still suffered massive plagues like the 1915 influenza outbreak on a regular basis?Michelle R.
