By 1918, huge numbers of otherwise unexceptional British and American officers hated the Germans with a passionate fury that you or I might think was appropriately directed only at Nazis. The tales of German nun-raping and baby-butchering were widely believed, and for some on our side, the violation of Belgian neutrality by itself was enough to push not just the German government but the whole German 'race' outside the bounds of human civilisation. A German unconditional surrender followed by a robust uprising against the occupying Allies would have been met with harsh penalties (probably including massacres of civilians) that would have made the Versailles treaty provisions look like a birthday cake in comparison.Dan MacCannellhttp://hdagency.co.uk/noreply@blogger.com
